I am woman, hear me orgasm
Women have been oppressed throughout history for various reasons and are now being shamed into suppressing their sexual desires, wants and needs and sexual expression.
Women are labeled numerous derogatory names like “slut” or “whore” when they are sexually expressive and verbal about their sexuality. Yet men are praised for doing the same thing. Men are rewarded by our society for sleeping with numerous amounts of women yet if a woman wants to act on her sexual desires she is shot down by our society.
Do not get me wrong, I understand that society labels men “man whores” when they can easily get women or brag about it but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Being a “man whore” is almost like receiving an award for having sexual intercourse with various individuals and having “game” with the ladies. I find it surprising that men typically are not labeled into feeling shameful for being sexually expressive yet women are.
“Men do all the labeling,” Bradley Mayo, 26, an undecided major said. Which could be a good reason why women are labeled so harshly while men are just teased about being sexual-beings. The terms “slut” and “whore” are both referred to as “a woman who engages in promiscuous sexual intercourse, usually for money” by Dictionary.com. Even the definition only states that a “slut” or a “whore” can be a woman. There is no mention of a promiscuous male. Yet most women are having sex because they simply just enjoy it, not for money. So why are we labeling women such horrible names when it does not pertain to them whatsoever.
A lot of people have a notion that men can have a unknown number of sexual partners yet women should have a predestined number that should never be exceeded. In a poll I took the average number of sexual partners in a lifetime that was deemed okay for a man was about 27 while the average number for women was eight. Why are these numbers not the same? Don’t we as a country want equality for all?
“It is not fair to say that a man can have sex with whomever he wants but a woman can’t because we do live in a world of equal opportunity,” Taryn Orlando, 21, a psychology major said.
“If a woman has the confidence then she definitely has the free will to be as sexually expressive as she wants,” Orlando said. Women should feel safe being sexually verbal and expressive and without fear of being ridiculed, Society should not focus on the number of sexual partners a certain person has, because that does not define that person. Who cares if they enjoy sex? Why does that even matter? A person is not defined by being sexually verbal, yet we still continue to do it.
We live in a highly sexualized society yet we are oppressing women and shaming them into not wanting to be sexually expressive. It is easy to see for yourself that women are sexually degraded, just turn on your radio and listen to the lyrics of many mainstream songs. It is perfectly okay to play songs on the radio saying things like “I want a lady in the street but a freak in the sheets”, “bitches ain’t shit but hoes and tricks”, and the list goes on and on. Yet women cannot be verbal about their sexuality without fear of tainting their reputation, which is extremely unfair, and a blatant double standard.
I challenge all students to stop the sex shaming and labeling. We are sexual-being and should be able to express ourselves sexually and verbally if we want. I mean, who doesn’t like sex. I love it.
